Generally, treatments begin with gathering patient history. This can include asking targeted questions to gain better clinical insight, observation of the tongue and pulses, orthopedic testing, and light palpation. A treatment protocol is then established, and treatment is administered soon after. Treatment can include acupuncture, herbal medicine, gua sha, cupping, and/or other modalities within the scope of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine.
For a first time appointment, the entire session can last up to 90 minutes to obtain an adequate patient history. Returning patient treatments are typically 45 to 60 minutes.
The needles are almost as thin as a piece of hair, and are inserted with gentle precision. Occasionally, a quick "pinch" can be felt upon insertion, and sometimes a feeling of tenderness or warmth can occur at the insertion sight. Most patients report the treatment overall to be painless and pleasant.
While the number of sessions needed varies by patient and problem, there are few issues that can be addressed with a single treatment. One can generally expect 3-4 treatments to yield noticeable shifts, and 6-8 treatments to bring about resolution in most cases. This is highly variable, and individual cases will be discussed after initial consultation.
Yes, acupuncture is considered a safe and effective treatment. It is a non-invasive, drug-free method that has been used for thousands of years. Licensed acupuncturists are required to obtain THOUSANDS of hours of hands on clinical experience prior to becoming licensed. This distinguishes LAcs from other modalities that also use needles.
